John Kremer and Jennifer Young purchased the property in 1991 and have rented studios to artists ever since.  With over 80 artists as tenants, the building is an anchor in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.

Minnesota State Arts Board Awards
Congratulations to California Building artists J.M. Culver and Jehra Patrick, recipients of 2015 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative grants.

Minnesota Originals
Learn about our Minnesota originals, J.M. Culver's figurative work which grows out of her relationship with her grandfather and Phil Daniels, creator of our new stained glass entry to the California Building.

A Muse Inspires Artwork

Susan Weinberg paints about story and has a series of works based on the Holocaust stories of a close friend with whom she shares an ancestral town.  The story of that relationship is shared in a Duets article in the Star Tribune.

Permanent Mosaic Installation through the efforts of California Building artist Connie Cohen.  Connie led mosaic workshops for the St. Louis Park Friends of the Arts program, Our Town.  The results of that effort are in permanent installation at the Shops of West End.

Inspired by Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, artist Brenda Litman has created a series of paintings that reference nature and our journey through life. Using a combination of repeated marks, symbols, and symbolic gestures, Litman explores the poetic aspect of abstract painting
