Artist Spotlight

Patricia Canney

Patricia Canney is a Minneapolis artist who received her BA from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Studio Art. After spending 2 yrs in the Peace Corps in West Africa she came back to Minneapolis to work in television graphics, advertising and graphic design. She returned to fine art with pen, ink and watercolor, painting with other artists in Brittany. She has taken many painting workshops and continues painting in her NE Minneapolis Arts District studio. She has taught painting workshops in the Texas hill country.

She paints the places and people from her history and experience… mostly garments, interiors, and still life. The garment paintings evolved from store fronts, tailors’ work rooms, dressmakers’ studios, ballet and theater costumes. The restaurant interiors are reminiscent of the small town cafe her parents owned. The dresses – from playing “dress up”…the fabric, sewing and design from childhood times.

She is currently represented by: Art Resources Gallery, Minneaplis, Minnesota Gardner Colby Gallery, Naples, Florida Trove Gallery, Park City, Utah

Statement I have always played “dress-up”…with a trunk of old clothes, with fabric and thread or with canvas, paint and brushes. It’s what I do still. I am intrigued by dresses, garments, shoes, objects of life, as well as the spaces they inhabit. The paintings that evolve are intimate and personal, both close to the heart and illusive—figurative without the figure. I invite the viewer to join me in entering that space where fantasy and memory converge.
